Discovering the Sea of Minde - learn more about our region

There is a sea in the center of Portugal. It has no waves. It has no salt. And it does not appear on maps throughout the year.

It is said that a German gentleman visited the Sea of Minde during a particularly rainy winter. Enchanted, he returned months later with his boat in the summer, but the water had disappeared. Mystery? Not at all.

Let us explain why our village of Minde, the birthplace of Knitwear , is so special.

In years of heavy rainfall and during winter, when the underground rivers of the Serras de Aire and Candeeiros exceed their usual flow, water emerges through various natural springs and floods the karst depression of Minde and Mira de Aire.

A temporary lake then forms in the Mira-Minde polje.

This phenomenon is called the Sea of Minde.

A seasonal event, rare in the Iberian Peninsula, which lasts only a few weeks and, in certain winters, may not even occur. It is not guaranteed. It is not predictable. It is a delicate balance between rain, rock, and weather.

And perhaps it is precisely this unpredictability that makes it so special.

The temporary lagoon creates a seasonal habitat that attracts waterfowl, both migratory and resident. Herons, mallards, coots, and other species find an unexpected resting and feeding spot in the interior of the country. The water mirror becomes a quiet refuge for those who observe carefully.

During the flooding phase, the transformation is complete. Orchards, vineyards, olive groves, and wooded areas are submerged beneath the new water surface. What was once productive land becomes a lake in just a few days.

Life quickly adapts. Underwater vegetation develops, and large masses of slime envelop the trunks and branches of partially submerged trees. The treetops emerge like small green islands, while the trunks disappear under a dense, organic layer.

It is an almost surreal landscape. Trees that seem to float. Fields that cease to be fields.

A rapid, intense, and temporary metamorphosis within our PNSAC - Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park. " On December 2, 2005,the Mira-Mindepolje was included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention."

Approximately 4 kilometers long and 1.8 kilometers wide, the Minde polje completely changes its identity throughout the year.

In summer, it is a place for walks with friends, trails to Lagoeiro along bramble paths, and peaceful evenings in the open countryside. But when the sea forms, everything changes. What was once traveled on foot becomes a horizon of water. What was once a trail becomes a shore. The silence remains, but the landscape reinvents itself.

What used to be explored on foot is now explored by canoe. Paths are transformed into routes for stand-up paddleboarding. And there are those who take advantage of the unexpected depth to dive into this temporary realm of biodiversity. The territory does not disappear. It reinvents itself.

The Minde Sea is not just a natural phenomenon. It is an experience.

You live with time. With curiosity. With a desire to discover what is not marked in conventional guidebooks.

If you decide to visit during the flood season, don't wait too long. Here we share our personal suggestions. Places with identity. Spaces that reflect the character of this land. Because this is our home.

Where to Eat:

MINDELÍCIAS PASTRY SHOP

If you are looking for a place to enjoy a good breakfast, count on our favorite spot to start the day. A refreshing natural juice accompanied by cakes made by Lúcia, worthy of a professional pastry shop, or, if you are a purist, a simple toast. Leandro and Lúcia are the owners of this pastry shop and make it an unmissable morning meeting point in Minde.

GET TO KNOW THE BREWERY

For those who enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere, sipping a mini beer at the stainless steel bar or savoring a Prego à Conhê, this is the place to be. It also offers a daily soup made by Palmira. Here you can watch the game indoors or on the terrace between rounds and snacks.

VIEIRA PIZZERIA

It is among the mountains and flora of the Serras d'Aire and Candeeiros that Pizzaria Vieira explores traditional flavors in harmony with Italian cuisine. Indulge in a mountain-inspired pizza, codfish baked on a tile, or roast kid, so typical of our region. This is a family restaurant run by the Vieira family. Please note that you must book a table at the weekend or you may not be able to have lunch.

Where to Stay:

TI NOÉMIA VILLAGE HOUSE

This local accommodation is a house dating back to 1937, completely restored and modernized, while maintaining respect for its original architecture, thus immortalizing its history and significance. All the stone and wood details have been preserved by the great-grandniece, owner of the house, our dear friend Andreia Gameiro, a hostess who is passionate about decoration, gastronomy, hiking, and canoeing. This house is located in the center of Minde, a 5-minute walk from the polje and a few steps from the main services. This is the ideal place for a group looking for privacy, a winter fireplace, and a summer pool.

Largo das Eiras 35, 2395-126 Minde

FOREST RETREAT - COUNTRY HOUSE

The house is set in a small wood full of native species: a hundred-year-old oak tree, ash trees, and fig trees, in whose shade you can relax on one of the sun loungers, reading a good book or listening to the song of blackbirds, hoopoes, and thrushes. Rebuilt from a family home, it blends the ancestral roots of a village that is almost 900 years old with a modern simplicity that will make you feel welcome, as if you were at home. It is available for booking by the room, allowing for a stay with the possibility of quiet encounters and unexpected conversations.

What to do:

ROQUE GAMEIRO WATERCOLOR MUSEUM

The only museum in Portugal entirely dedicated to watercolors and the work of Alfredo Roque Gameiro, one of the great references in Portuguese painting. Housed in Casa dos Açores, a remarkable example of early 20th-century architecture linked to the artist's family, it brings together drawings and watercolors from the Roque Gameiro Arts and Crafts Center, the family, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Discover this small museum surrounded by a beautiful garden. Roque Gameiro's work is characterized by a profound sensitivity to nature and the human figure, visible in the care taken with every detail and the intensity of his portraits, such as in the emblematic "Portrait of his mother."

Largo Justino Guedes No. 2, 2395-102 Minde

WEAVING WORKSHOP AT THE ROQUE GAMEIRO ARTS AND CRAFTS CENTER

The Weaving Workshop, part of the Roque Gameiro Arts and Crafts Center, is one of the guardians of the Manta de Minde, an emblematic textile piece from the region. Here, a craft tradition that spans generations is preserved. With three manual looms in operation, the weavers master all stages of the process, from warping to finishing, working exclusively with Portuguese wool. In addition to its cultural and educational aspects, the workshop offers blankets and other textile products for sale, allowing visitors to take home an authentic piece of this local heritage. More than just a production space, it is a place where memory, technique, and territory remain alive.
